Hard Words to Translate
While all translations inherently change the meaning of the text, some words are particularly steeped in cultural conceptions or otherwise lack equivalents in other languages and thus are particularly hard to translate.
Ghost - While many cultures, and thus many languages, have a concept of a creature which is similar to the English word ghost in that they are an incorporeal representation of a dead person's spirit which remains on Earth. Even within English, however, this concept has a long history with a wide array different traits associated with the creature and similarly varied reasons for its continued presence, degree of malice, etc. A "proper" translation of the term requires the translator to distinguish what type of spirit is implied by the use of the English ghost and which term is most similar to that in the target language for translation.
